In addition, the people of Bryggja have traditionally been farmers and fishermen. The village likely got its name from Bryggen (the wharf) at Storøen, or Ystebryggja, as it was colloquially known. The harbour was sheltered by the islands and was a safe landing place at a time when oars and sails fuelled the traffic on the sea.
